Sarah Palin Isn't Not Not Dis-Un-Lying About Banning Books
My grandmother Grace was a librarian in a tiny northern town. (Population 20,000. Average annual snowfall 11 feet.) She was a little old Irish lady. Flinty. You'd have liked her. She'd help you find a book. So, while I know there are lots of other, better reasons to dislike Sarah Palin, bullying the librarian is mine.

You might think that makes me sound like someone with a petty grudge, but I prefer to think of it as rising above politics and putting the family first.

If my grandmother had been a rape victim, I'd probably be more annoyed that Sarah Palin made rape victims pay for their own exams. And wants to make them deliver their rapists' babies.

If my grandmother had been a wolf, I'd probably think Palin's least attractive proclivity was hurting animals for fun.

We may never know exactly what happened between Sarah Palin and Wasilla's librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons. Alaska under Palin has replaced war as the province of uncertainty. But we can certainly agree that the mayor wanted the librarian's head.

We also know that Palin asked Emmons three times about banning books in the library, and Emmons refused and Palin tried to fire her. But does that prove Palin wanted to ban books? "It's an old wives' tale," Palin told Charlie Gibson, in a statement that only resembles a denial from a distance.

Everything gets slick in Alaska, I guess. Even the past. Palin admits that she had at least one discussion with Emmons but, according to FactCheck.Org:

Palin characterized the exchange differently, initially volunteering the episode as an example of discussions with city employees about following her administration's agenda. Palin described her questions to Emmons as 'rhetorical,' noting that her questions 'were asked in the context of
professionalism regarding the library policy that is in place in our city.'

She wasn't asking Emmons to remove the books. She was sounding out Emmons on her feelings about an agenda. Of removing the books.

This statement, by McCain spokesman Brian Rogers, looks a lot more forceful:

The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period.

That's true, as far as it goes, but look at it again. Fans of Jesuitical hair-splitting might think the wiggle room here comes from the distinction between asking someone whether you can ask them to do something and asking them to do it. But that's not it.

Ignore "period." Look at the place where he might have said "dependent clause." The important words are:

"The fact is that as Mayor,"

Sarah Palin never asked anyone to ban a book as Mayor. As Mayor -- of a Wal-Mart and a snowmobile trail -- she was only interested in censorship in general.

As the New York Times reported this weekend, she only pushed to ban books by name when she was on the city council.

I hope that clears up everything.

Why was it so important for Brian Rogers to slip in the words "as Mayor" a week ago, before anyone had heard about Sarah Palin's city council campaign to protect Alaska from Daddy's Roommate?

The fact is that when silent, Brian Rogers isn't lying.

Period.

--

Brian Rogers kind of reminds me of something John McCain said during the national pig/lipstick crisis last week:

Senator Obama chooses his words very carefully, okay? He shouldn't have said it. He shouldn't have said it. He chooses his words very carefully.

He's right. You've got to despise people who act like that.

--

Speaking of choosing words.

As FactCheck.org points out, when Sarah Palin said her questions were "rhetorical," she probably meant they were "hypothetical."

Sometimes you'd almost swear the person John McCain wants breaking ties in the Senate is a numbskull.

Holy crap! I have to admit, I am totally stealing some of the things you are about to read, but at least I am crediting them to their original sources....something local media outlets took a very long time to learn about....but these are just TOOOOO good not to be shared. If the following few items don't scare the ever-loving poop right out of you, or at least make you say, "What the....?" then I am SERIOUSLY concerned for your mental well-being......

Palin linked electoral success to prayer of Kenyan witchhunter

The pastor whose prayer Sarah Palin says helped her to become governor of Alaska founded his ministry with a witchhunt against a Kenyan woman who he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells.

At a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Mrs Palin described how Thomas Muthee had laid his hands on her when he visited the church as a guest preacher in late 2005, prior to her successful gubernatorial bid.

In video footage of the speech, she is seen saying: “As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he’s so bold. And he was praying “Lord make a way, Lord make a way.”

“And I’m thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn’t even know what I’m going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are. And he’s praying not “oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,” no, he just prayed for it. He said “Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that’s exactly what happened.”

She then adds: “So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church,” before the presiding pastor comments on the “prophetic power” of the event.

An African evangelist, Pastor Muthee has given guest sermons at the Wasilla Assembly of God on at least 10 occasions in his role as the founder of the Word of Faith Church, also known as the Prayer Cave.

Pastor Muthee founded the Prayer Cave in 1989 in Kiambu, Kenya after “God spoke” to him and his late wife Margaret and called him to the country, according to the church’s website.

The pastor speaks of his offensive against a demonic presence in the town in a trailer for the evangelical video “Transformations”, made by Sentinel Group, a Christian research and information agency.

“We prayed, we fasted, the Lord showed us a spirit of witchcraft resting over the place,” Pastor Muthee says.

After the spirit was broken, the crime rate dropped to almost zero and there was “explosive church growth” while almost every bar in the town closed down, the video says.

The full Transformations video featuring Pastor Muthee’s story has recently been removed from YouTube but the rest of the story is detailed in a 1999 article in the Christian Science Monitor, as well as on numerous evangelical websites.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, six months of fervent prayer and research identified the source of the witchcraft as a local woman called Mama Jane, who ran a “divination” centre called the Emmanuel Clinic.

Her alleged involvement in fortune-telling and the fact that she lived near the site of a number of fatal car accidents led Pastor Muthee to publicly declare her a witch responsible for the town’s ills, and order her to offer her up her soul for salvation or leave Kiambu.

Says the Monitor, “Muthee held a crusade that “brought about 200 people to Christ”.” They set up round-the-clock prayer intercession in the basement of a grocery store and eventually, says the pastor “the demonic influence – the ‘principality’ over Kiambu –was broken”, and Mama Jane fled the town.

According to accounts of the witchhunt circulated on evangelical websites such as Prayer Links Ministries, after Pastor Muthee declared Mama Jane a witch, the townspeople became suspicious and began to turn on her, demanding that she be stoned. Public outrage eventually led the police to raid her home, where they fired gunshots, killing a pet python which they believed to be a demon.

After Mama Jane was questioned by police – and released – she decided it was time to leave town, the account says.

Pastor Muthee has frequently referred to this witchhunt in his sermons as an example of the power of “spiritual warfare”. In October 2005, he delivered ten sermons at the Wasilla Assembly of God, the audio of which was available on the church’s website until it was removed around the time Mrs Palin’s candidacy was announced. The blog Irregular Times has listings and screen grabs of the sermons.

It was during that these sermons that Mrs Palin, who was then preparing for her gubernatorial run, was anointed by Pastor Muthee. His intercession, she says, was “awesome”.

Her June 8 speech was to mark the graduation of students from the Wasilla Assembly of God’s Masters’ Commission, which, as Pastor Ed Kalins explains, believes Alaska will be the refuge for American evangelicals upon the coming “End of Days”. After her speech, Mrs Palin was presented with an honorary Masters’ Commission diploma.

Wow, I hate being right all the time......

In response to my letter in 9-10 Rushville Republican:

I disagree with most everything you wrote. Having said that, your enthusiasm, and the obvious extent to which you have informed yourself, are totally inspiring. Our country needs more people like you.

It'll be a cold day in Hades when I want to see this socialist Obama get elected. He's just a smooth talker with socialist views. And why would you speak of "choice" of letting the unborn live or not as if that is the norm? Yes let's do judge by the content of chadacter of these candidates but when that happens the McCain/Palin ticket will surely win big!

You do realize that Obama is a Socialist right? He wants to increase the tax burden on Americans so that he can fund his pet projects like Universal (Socialized) Healthcare. He has ZERO executive experience. McCain isn't much better, but like most recent elections its a case of voting for the lesser of two evils, and Obama is most assuredly the greater evil.

We get it Bonnie. You're supporting BHO and there's no amount of facts or truth that will change your mind. Bonnie, I don't care (well actually I do, but...) whether BHO is Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, or Christian. What I do care about is that he is the most unqualified candidate for POTUS that this country has seen in over 100 years. I do care that he sat in a pew for over 20 years and listened to the racist, hate filled frothings of one of the most radical, anti-American "pastors" in this country today. I do care that he has "friendly" relationship with an admitted, unrepentant terrorist (William Ayers) who detonated bombs in the US Capitol and Pentagon among others and today, "Wishes that he would have done more." I do care that he is the most liberal voting senator in Congress today. I do care that he has no (none, zilch, zero) executive experience. I do care that there's nothing in his resume or past experiences that in any way qualifies him to command the most powerful military in the world today. I do care that his wife said that, "For the first time in her adult life she was proud of her country"...after her husband started winning a few primary elections. (Bonnie, I've been proud of my country every day of my life.) I do care that the most significant piece of legislation that he ever attached his name to would deny lifesaving medical treatment to a baby that survived a late term abortion...which he also supports. i do care that he said that he didn't want his daughters to be "punished" with a baby if they chose to have pre-marital sex. I do care that he thinks that he has the right to take my money from me (and yours from you Bonnie) and redistribute it as he sees fit. I do care that he will raise my taxes to pay for all of his socialist, entitlement programs. I do care that he won't permit drilling off of our coasts or in the ANWR but prefers to leave us forever dependent on foreign oil. I do care that BHO voted "No" on establishing English as the official language of the United States government. I do care that he supports open borders, wants to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, wants to extend Medicare and welfare benefits to illegal immigrants and also Social Security...our Social Security benefits Bonnie...yours and mine. I do care that while in the Illinois State Legislature he voted "Present" approximately 130 times rather than stick his neck out and cast a "Yea" or "Nay" vote on something that might come back to haunt his political career later. Bonnie, I can go on for longer than anyone wants to sit here and read. I admire you for sticking by and supporting your candidate even when there is so much about him that should make you want to turn around and run..far away. He's proven himself to be the same 'ol same 'ol...a political hack who will do or say anything to get elected. But, as committed and supportive as you are, I'm just as committed to making sure that he never sees the inside of the Oval Office. He's unfit. The material is out there Bonnie. The books are on the shelf. The research has been done for you. It's not opinion, its verified, proven research supported by fact. Don't take my word for it. (I wouldn't expect you to.) Pick up a copy of Jerome Corsi's book "The Obama Nation." Pick up "The Case Against Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media's Favorite Candidate" by David Freddoso. Open yourself up to the possibility that you're spurrin' the wrong horse. There are many, many things that I probably will disagree with John McCain about, but the one thing that i will never question about John McCain, is his deep, unfailing love for this country and his lifetime of devoted service to it. I'll see you in November.

One more thing Bonnie, I see your son walking to and from school sporting his Obama t-shirt. I really think that it’s unfair to use your middle school-aged son to promote your adult political views. It might perpetuate the "rock star" status of BHO in the halls of BRMS, but I seriously doubt that, if questioned about his choice of candidate by someone like me, he's prepared to weather the storm or put up an argument. Personally, I'd like to see politics left to those of us of voting age and the kids left to be kids for just as long as they can possibly hold out. They'll be thrust into life soon enough. Let’s not rush it. Just my $.02

OK, I put my name and my ass out there on the line, in this little hill-jack town, for what I believe in....what are you gonna do???

When I was a kid, I saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. I still remember seeing body counts on the evening news with Walter Cronkite as reports from Vietnam came in.

Obama supporter speaks out

Dear Editor:

When I was a kid, I saw Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. I still remember seeing body counts on the evening news with Walter Cronkite as reports from Vietnam came in. I remember MLK and RFK being shot. I remember when Elvis died. I remember when Nixon resigned. I remember the Iranian hostage crisis, and how it ended abruptly when Reagan took office. I remember when Squeaky Fromme took potshots at Ford, and when John Lennon was killed. I remember when some loser tried to impress Jody Foster by shooting Reagan. I saw Mondale speak when he ran for President with Geraldine Ferraro as his VP candidate. THAT was exciting for an independent, emancipated woman like me.

But, I never thought I would see what has happened in American politics this year. I think our country is finally beginning to grow up. It's about time. For a country that was founded, allegedly, on the idea of tolerance, we have been one of the most intolerant nations on earth – intolerant of race, religion, sex, height, weight, differences of opinion. Our ancestors, those who came here of their own free will, came here for a change, yet so many people in this country are afraid of just that, change. "It's always been that way, so just leave it," "If it was good enough for my mom and dad, it's good enough for me, " and so on and so on. But, on Aug. 28, with one loud, clear voice, projected out into a clear, cloudless beautiful Denver sky, a group of diverse people – different colors, different sexes, different religions - all came together and asked for CHANGE.

That, in itself, was amazing enough. But the most amazing part is the man they asked to help them achieve it. After centuries of placing the most powerful office in our country into the hands of one type of man, a different type came forward. He was not like all the others before him in appearance, but in heart and soul he was much more like those early leaders and founders of our country than most of the recent leaders of our nation have been. He cares more about US, the people, than himself or his friends. His name is Barack Obama.

A funny name, yes. His father, Kenyan. His mother, Kansan. Of course, you know all that by now. Oh, but many of you say, (and yes, I have heard that and gotten that e-mail from folks right here in Rushville) "I have read/heard/been told he is a Muslim, because his father was/is!" No, he is not. He is a Christian, and attends a United Church of Christ. "Well, he doesn't wear an American flag lapel pin, or participate in the Pledge of Allegiance!" To the first part, he does, on occasion, wear the flag pin. Do YOU wear a flag pin every day? Does that mean YOU love your country any less? My father was a WW II veteran and never wore a flag pin a day in his life. Does that mean he was unpatriotic? No, it was a personal choice. An outward sign of patriotism does not always mean the heart is in the right place. As for the pledge, if you are referring to a photo passed around and around on the Internet, that photo was taken during the singing of the National Anthem, and none of the folks in that photo are looking at the flag behind them. Really hard to judge what they are looking at. But, what about him being sworn in on the Quran? That is completely false. A Minnesota Congressman named Keith Ellison, who is a Muslim, chose to carry a Quran instead of a Bible, since he would not actually be sworn in on a Bible anyway. And, the Quran he carried had been owned by Thomas Jefferson.

There are many other concerns out there about Obama – but on this night – this one night – the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's stirring "I Have a Dream Speech," Americans, some Americans, enough Americans, finally began to "judge not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character." And how appropriate that Dr. King even said, "Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado!"

For those who felt Obama did not give enough information early on in his campaign as to what he wanted to do and how, he spelled that out last night. Strangely enough, much of it is what he said to a small group, gathered in a room for lunch, back in April this year. I even felt he used some of our words last night, and was honored. He wants to work for you, for me, for all of us out here trying to merely make a living, raise our children, and be good people. He is NOT going to work for the oil companies, the polluters, the insurance companies turning us away without care. He IS one of us – he knows our lives, and he wants to help. As a man from Indiana who spoke last night at the convention said, "we need a government who puts Barney Smith before Smith Barney."

On the Republican ticket, John McCain, for whom I have the utmost respect for his service to our nation, has chosen a young, unknown woman governor as his running mate. Interesting choice. Trying to get the women's vote, obviously. Trying to reach out to young people, OK. But, choosing someone just because of her sex and age is not enough. I believe this was an attempt to get the vote of those women who supported Hillary. As a woman, as a mother, I have looked into the beliefs and policies of Gov. Palin and do not feel that, as an average American woman, she and I share very many things in common. Many people have touted her experience, but she was mayor of a town not much bigger than Rushville before she was elected governor. Did you know she is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest? She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species – she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska; and the list goes on.

It is time for change. Our country does need to grow up. How many other nations have had minority or female leaders since the mid-’60s? Dozens. While I am excited that we have both a woman and a minority in this race, my heart and soul are not with the female candidate because she does not stand for what I stand for. I believe Barack Obama does. If people would take the time to educate themselves, not just blindly believe every rumor or e-mail that comes their way, they might find something to believe in, too.

Yes, I believe. Yes, I think together, we CAN! And it is going to take all of us, together.

We're in Big Trouble
Posted September 7, 2008 | 11:41 PM (EST)

We're talking to ourselves.

And we're not saying anything that's going to help win this election.

Everyone who cares knows that Sara Palin is a born again, right wing Republican. That she's a right-to-life, anti-gay, anti-global-warming, book-banning kind of gal.

No one seems to care.

The package and not the content is what's attracting interest. How cute she is when she says it. How cute she is when she skins a caribou. How cute are those barely grown expectant children of hers.

My first instinct was to scream from the roof tops that no self respecting woman was going to fall for this McCain manipulation. But apparently, plenty have. Plenty share her views and the crowds and the TV ratings are growing. The same way they grow for American Idol and other reality shows. Seems like we would rather watch ourselves, however diminished, on TV and in the public eye than people watch people with actual skills and talents. Watching people just like ourselves eating bugs and falling into vats of peanut butter has become a favorite American past time. And apparently, we would rather have an ill informed, inexperienced leader than one with experience and education. Experience has been denigrated to the level of liberal as a word. It's to be laughed at and ridiculed. And a lot of people are buying it. And we're supposed to slink away, like the nerd in high school being attacked by the football player.
Story continues below
advertisement

But this isn't high school and we're supposed to know better. We have got to take back these words and what they stand for. Leaders need to be chosen from the most talented among us, not from the bottom of the barrel. And we shouldn't be afraid to say so.

What kind of misplaced chivalry would keep the Democrats from calling Sarah Palin what she is? An ignorant, misinformed, inexperienced, bigoted fraud. And unless we find a way to do it, she will be running the country before we have time to turn around.

This will not be easy. I spent hours on the telephone to Ohio Democrats last presidential election. There was no way I was going to convince these working class Democrats that they were wrong to vote for Bush. Kerry scared them. And no manner of logic would turn it around. They voted against their own economic interests, against college for their kids, against their own medical care, against their first amendment rights. Why, because they had been told that Kerry was going to challenge their belief systems. He was "for abortion", "against the troops."

We're going to have to frame the argument in the same way. Who is Sarah Palin? A woman for sure. The package is nice, but the content is out of date and spoiled. If she gets anywhere near power we can expect global warming, the destruction of the constitution, the end of Choice, and books banned in our libraries. And we've got to make people understand this. And even if we can frame it this way, the question remains, are there many Americans who would care? Enough to sustain the constitution? Life as we know it?

I am terribly afraid that we are counting on good sense, and decency and it has gone the way of the ten cent subway ride. We are not thinking about each other. We are thinking about ourselves. Why else would we even consider a woman who tried to get her brother in law fired from his job for daring to divorce her sister. Who tried to get a local librarian to remove books she disapproved of from the library.

Politeness is not in order. We need to be scared. Terribly scared. We need to pull out all the stops. She's not going to self destruct in front of an audience who likes these things about her. Who abhors the clarity and thoughtfulness of Obama. There is no drama in it. There's drama in teenage pregnancy, political scandal and moose hunting.

McCain seems to have known just what he was doing. Now the question remains, do we?

Yup, we're on own way.....

Especially the way this week is going.....

Hmmm, another idea....

So, I just had a thought...what if Bristol Palin (sorry, what kind of name is THAT??) got pregnant ON PURPOSE? Come on, you know girls who have done that. I had a friend all through high school...she and I went to the same college. About half-way through the fall
semester she told me how much she hated school, and how she would do ANYTHING to get out of coming back....

VIOLA! By Christmas, she was pregnant and planning her wedding!!! What if Bristol didn't just disregard the BRILLIANT proposition of "abstinence only" education, but deliberately got pregnant to get away from the Arctic Ken-n-Barbie household she lives in. Let's see....Mom gave birth to baby #5 in April, a boy with special needs, and took a whopping 3 days off work. I am sure they have staff to help with the care, but with Bristol being the oldest girl, I would be willing to bet quite a bit of his care, as well as that of her sisters, fell on her.

What if she got pregnant because she saw that as her only way out of the household at this point, never dreaming her mother would end up in this national spotlight (because, after all, no one had ever heard of her mother until last Saturday!) She wanted her own life, wanted to get away, wanted someone to love HER, not for what she could do to take care of other people, but just for her? If that would be the case, what would that say about what kind of person her mother is? Is that the kind of person we want a heartbeat away from the Presidency?

Just a thought......

He's 23 years older than the whole damn state!

Okay, I have already written here about how insulted I am by John McCain's choice of a Vice-Presidential Candidate. Apparently, the Republican National Committee thinks that women will not be able to see past their sexual organs in making political choices. We are all so stupid that we are going to be SO GLAD to see a woman.....any woman, on a major political ticket, that we won't even bother to examine this woman more closely, look at her voting record, take a look at what she stands for. My best friend sent me some information today that just confirmed the absolute insult I feel at this selection, and the abject terror this woman strikes in my heart. If you have not seen this, here is the info she sent me....

Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

  • She was elected Alaska 's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
  • Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
  • She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
  • Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
  • She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5
  • She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
  • How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7
So, yeah, basically, she IS the most evil of Fembots on the planet. She wants to teach creationism and abstinence (HEY!!! That works, doesn't it GRANDMA?) Wants to drill in our protected wilderness, doesn't believe we are causing global warming, and doesn't care if your 12 year old daughter was raped and became pregnant as a result of that rape...she should have to suffer and bear the child of that attack for 9 months, just to give it away. In other words, she is so Anti-Woman, Anti-American, Anti---everything I stand for, that I can barely stand to think of her....

And people from my state are at the Convention wearing "Hoosiers for the Hot Chick" campaign buttons.....Holy crap. People have honestly been concerned that Obama is the Anti-Christ. I think they had better re-focus their view to the north.....Juneau what I mean?
